My 07 toyota Corolla automatic transmission slips and slight shutter in 3rd and 4th gear. Also when I put it in drive and feed gas from a stop it will slip the catch. It has over 280,000 highway miles. I haven’t looked at the color or smell of the fluid but I do know it hasn’t been changed. I’m afraid to now since I know that it could just stop working right all together. Thank you in advance for you time and consideration.

If the fluid is original (280K miles!), then changing it likely would be detrimental as the new fluid will be thinner and leak past seals. Everyone will have their own view, because sometimes the seals can be good and the fluid just worn out, so there is a chance that changing your fluid will be successful…but maybe not.

Your first step is to look at the condition of the fluid. The second step is to make sure you have to correct amount of fluid in. Let us know what you find.

In my experience if the fluid is full with a hot and idling engine with that many miles the transmission is trying to tell you that it`s had enough.

agreed with wysetech, she is probably had enough, probably getting near time for a tranny overhaul.

if the fluid is black in color that is also probably a good indicator that you have some clutch plates warn out

            here is this also.

The fluid is a grayish brown and smells kinda burnt. I did a torque converter stall test and it stalled at 2400 rpms. I can’t find anywhere if that is good or bad

Now that you’ve check the level and the color its likely as Ace and Wysetech said, you’re tranny is giving you a little notice that it’s near done. Take advantage of the time to decide if you want to have it rebuilt, buy a used or rebuilt one, or replace your vehicle. As long as your converter is a stock/OE converter, I wouldn’t worry about stall speed. That really is only important for those that are towing/racing, not the daily driver.

I’m with the group on this one. Sounds like the transmission may be toast. More information on issues like this as well as a write up on changing fluid after many miles can be found here.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I was wondering what type of transmission fluid I need to use?

Look in your owners manual under fluid capacities.
