I can’t figure out where this noise is coming from. I used to have a grinding noise about a month and a half ago, but I found it to be the bearing in the tensioner pulley. I probably should replace the tensioner though, because the pulley wobbles around. The tensioner however is on the passenger side but the noise seems to be coming form the driver’s side. I spun all pulleys and have not been able to replicate the noise. The noise happens at exactly 1500 rpm and increases with engine speed. Any help is appreciated!

Also, the water pump has been leaking so I’m going to replace that since I have the part. I just haven’t had enough time to do it. I’ll prob do it manana since I have the day off.

You may want to remove the serpentine belt and spin
all your accessories by hand. If the water pump is
leaking and the fan is attached.grab a hold of the
fan and see if the water pump bearing has any play.

No play in the fan and no noise from any of the pulleys. They didn’t have any play either. I can’t remember when I replaced the belt, but it was for sure last year. I’ll let you guys know what happens after I replace the water pump. Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah, my pulley is rusty for some reason haha. I replaced the alt in april though. I haven’t replaced the water pump yet either lol. My g-pa also uses my truck, so I’ve been waiting for a time where neither of us will need it. Hopefully this weekend! I’ve checked everything though… I wish I can spin everything at 1500 rpm with my hand haha.

I’m with the idea of checking the components. This video may also help.

Thanks Eric and collegeman! It ended up being the dumb water pump. I actually remembered that I replaced it about 7 months ago, but with an autozone pump. I just went with OEM this time to skip the poop lol. I did notice that I need a new tensioner though. Thing oscillates a little too much.

Also, I noticed I had an oil leak around my timing cover, so I cleaned the area full of grime. I was actually going to poke around to see if I can locate the leak, but I completely forgot about it, and now there is a little spot of oil on the ground which was never there… Haha, I should’ve just left it alone! Anyways, if it ends up being my timing cover, I’ll probably do the chain and everything else inside. I’ll make a thread for that later on. Thanks again!

Glad that you found the noise. The leak may be the
timing cover seal.is the leak by the crank pulley? 🙂

I wish! It’s right behind my tensioner and the leak is a span of like 3 inches. Doesn’t go below or above that. The valve cover is dry and the only seepage I can see is where the RTV is that seals the timing cover… I know the Tacoma’s have a TSB for this exact problem, but only for the 4.0’s. Laaaame. It stopped leaking, thankfully. I haven’t seen any more spots on the ground. I’m thinking it was my buddy’s ranger that made the spots, because I was helping him with his truck too the same day haha.

maybe your in luck with his leak being the issue.

Funny, you think it was your buddies Ranger that left the oil leak.

Glad you found the problem. Feel free to contribute as much as possible with the repairs you have planned, we love the addition of new information around here.

Thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum.
