hello, i recently purchased an 07 sonata with a 2.4l engine, basically sight unseen with a “bad” engine. the car runs and drives and what sounds like to me is a rod knock, but another friend of mine looked at it and thinks its not. anyway. i pulled the oil pan and found alot of metal shavings. i wanted to look up by the connecting rods but it what looks like the oil pump that covers the whole bottom of the engine basically. (im not too familiar with working cars, i usually work on v8s, rearwheel drive trucks).

pulling the coil wires while its running doesnt really affect the noise.
to me: it sounds like its right under the top of the engine pounding with a hammer like it wants to come out.

after some more and more research engines are not cheap for these even at salvage yards. i also found that these had issues with the timing chain tensioner.

      i found this article: http://www.autoworksmn.com/blog/adam-e2-80-99s-service-tip-3a-timing-chain-noise

i have a pic and a video of the noise.. im basically asking, is it worth it to pull the timing cover and look at the chain? or do i start looking for a used engine. thanks.

The timing chains on those engines are VERY susceptible to having issues as a result of poor maintenance. It honestly sounds like this one might have skipped enough to bust a valve, or something worse. If in doubt you could always do a compression test, but once you start looking at doing head work (possible best case scenario) you might as well start looking for an engine.

The good news is, those engines are incredibly numerous. That is the 2.4 “world” engine that was used by Hyundai/Kia, Mitsubishi and Chrysler/Dodge from ’07 thru ’11 I believe.

If you’re planning on replacing the engine, I would pull it apart out of curiosity.

i will try a compression test on all cylinders, it did have a misfire code on cylinder 3. also i dont think it was run low on oil. what is the differences on the older model engines? those 2.4s are completely different then the newer 06+ ones?
