I recently got a 06 ranger and the temp gauge rarely wrks. It mainly shows that it is cold. It does move up a little when you turn key on but then very seldom does it read a correct temp? Could it may be sending unit and where might it be located?

disconnect the coolant temp sensor.use a paper clip
and jumper the connector.see if the gauge goes to hot.
if it does go to hot replace coolant temp sensor. When
you jumper the connector you may need to ground it.try
the jumper method first before the grounding method.

If you have a scan tool, you can also look at the coolant temperature to see how accurate that gauge is.

But if you have access to some wiring diagrams you can try to activate the gauge by applying a power or ground (again look at the diagram).

Also check for loose connections and it would be a bad idea to do some voltage drop testing too.

Do the sensors tend to go bad over time?

              coolant sensors do fail.

Ok I unplugged the connector and tried to jump the two connections and when I unplugged the connector the gauge went all the way down like the key was off the jumper didn’t do anything. When the key is on the gauge is on cold never moves except intermittently very seldom. Do you think it is the gauge it self or the sender on engine? I would think if it was a fuse all gauges would be affected? Should I try and change senser or would it be a waste?

If you grounded the sensor and it did not move
then either its the gauge or wiring issue. Also
                  check the fuse.
