I’ve got a 2006 Honda Odyssey which has just recently been experiencing power steering pump noise. I was driving on the interstate for a few hours and pulled off to at my exit and immediately noticed a really weird noise. I thought it was my tranny for a sec and had a minor heart attack. I figured out it was my power steering because the noise got louder when I turned the wheel. I stopped at a service station to see what was going on under the hood and saw millions of bubbles in the power steering fluid reservoir. When I restarted my vehicle to drive away, the noise was gone.

After a few more hours of driving the noise was back. What could it be? It only seems to happen when the vehicle is hot and was driving for long distance. I looked online and many resources say it could be the o-rings that failed on the high pressure and low pressure power steering lines, or it could be the whole pump. My van only has 54680 miles.

      Thanks for any help,
      Joey

could be the inlet O ring leaking causing air into the system.
        There is a TSB out

In addition to the above post, it could also just be low fluid. You might want to check the fluid level with the engine off after the bubbles have gone away. Be sure you only use Honda fluid in that system. Using other fluids can cause damage to the system. A small leak over time can cause enough fluid to escape to make a noise.

Hi Eric (Me again 🙂 )
’03 TL with 170k miles, P.S. pump started to make very loud whining noise and it also has bubbles, at one point fluid actually started sipping out of the reservoir’s cap. I’m getting ready to flush the entire PS fluid and replacing it with Honda PS fluid. Before knowing much, I followed, the advise of the local autozone store and put Lucas’ power steering conditioner – which supposedly works on Hondas and Acura’s too – I removed some of the old fluid from the reservoir, which by the way, was very dark and some krud does appear as well. I removed almost all the fluid from the reservoir and replaced it with Lucas’ PS conditioner and ran the car at 2000 RPM for about 10mins until the fans kicked in, then I ran it on idle speed
The whining noise and bubbles did not go away After further inspection of the R&P system, I found one of the boots was not fully seated at one end (see attached)

it’s really stuck in that position, I tried pushing it the rest of the way but it won’t budge. My questions are:
            1. Does this gap seem enough to cause the loud whining noise i hear from the pump?
            2. Do you think that my pump’s toast and I should just replace it along with the ‘boot and clamp? If so, what brand of boot kit do you recommend?
Thanks again for all your help,
            Juan

Never mind, I now know my question regarding the boot is completely irrelevant to the whining noise and bubbling fluid (given that the boot only protects gear and joins inside). I will remove the reservoir and clean it thoroughly to ensure it doesn’t have a clogged screen, but more and more sounds like my pump’s toast. Replacement pump has already been ordered.
              Thanks anyway,
              Juan
