hello, i have a 06 nissan sentra with the 2.5 engine. lately it has been having an intermittent miss fire, engine will be running fine then out of nowhere it starts making a loud popping noise in the exhaust, car will not accelerate. i turn the car off and then back on and it runs fine, and there is no check engine light or codes stored in the computer.

have you tried performing a power balance test on your motor? how many miles does the motor have?

here’s a is link on how Eric completes a power balance test:

yes, all coils are firing and i can hear the change in rpm when i disconnect them, i also replaced the spark plugs just to make sure. but like i stated its intermittent, and as soon as i turn the engine off and then back on, the car runs fine.

have you tried “reading” the spark plugs shortly after the engine beings to misfire?

The fact that you can turn the engine off and the problem clears tells me it is something electrical and engine computer related.

how can i go about testing that. should i be looking for a short to ground. and the car only has 68,000 miles.

Nothing stored in freeze frame data? what brand plugs did
you use? check the entire air box and snorkel for rips or
tares. Check the connector to the MAF and clean the MAF
with crc MAF cleaner. Also spray around for vacuum leaks.

can a fouled o2 sensor cause intermittent misfires.

I’d say no. The engine computer should just switch to an internal map. However, you might feel a hiccup as the computer is trying to switch to closed loop. That and you should get a CEL.

Okay the car starts misfiring and won’t accelerate. Then you restart the engine and everything is normal. How long can you drive before this reoccurs?

I can drive a minute going 40mph before it does it again. I believe its the pump going out. Its not maintaining pressure. And the car starts to stutter.

So, if you shift to neutral when it is acting up does it rev normally?

you can still hear it sputter, drove the car home today and it ran fine, and after a 20 minute drive i heard it sputter for a second.

If it does that I don’t think it is the transmission. If I was to hazard a guess, I’d say cam sensor. I think the crank sensor would cause the engine to stop.

I suggest you check the combustion chamber. Remove the spark plugs and check for any fluid inside the ‘holes’ with a flashlight.

If you have an infrared thermometer you may check the temperatures of each individual exhaust runner to verifywhich cylinder is misfiring.

The older Nissans used to have a lot of problems with the MAF sensors, which would cause some really awful performance issues, and would sometimes come and go, or seem to be RPM dependant, or even throttle position dependant. I don’t know if that would still be an issue with an ’06, but something to look at.
