So I have a 2006 Nissan Altima with bearing noise from the front passenger side that doesn’t get better or worse when turning, as if that’s not confusing enough it also has no play what so ever in the wheel when I jack it up. Fortunately I have ruled out carrier bearings and other trans/diff problems by jacking the front end up and isolating each tire then revving the speedometer up to the speed that the side makes above 30 mph. when I block of the affected side the noise doesn’t happen. When I block the driver side (the side that the noise isn’t coming from) the noise continues. I bought a pittsburg bearing press kit and am about to do the bearing next week. Do you think my suspicion is correct or am I going about this from the wrong angle???

If you have isolated the noise and hear it when the car is jacked up and not in motion, then you most likely are on the right track…
Most bearing noise sounds like a roar and can be confused with aggressive tire tread or other surface-making noise… It can start out at very low speeds and just continue to roar (not changing sound much with speed)…
If you got the sound to go away when it was making the sound by stopping a wheel and then when you let it run free and hear it, I think you have nailed it…

you are saying that it sounds like its coming from the passenger side, but when you let the driver side wheel spin it makes the noise right?

Okay so I jacked up my car and isolated both tires(one at a time) with a pry bar. The noise is coming from the passenger side soooo when I block the passenger side, POOF! the noise stops. When I stop the noisy side the noise stops. I really am thinking bad bearing but the symptoms just weren’t present. Thank you both for the information and sorry for a borderline rhetorical question….guess I just wanted reassurance lol.
I’ve learned that if you really want to know what is going on with the wheel bearing, pull the axle out of the hub. Now you can turn the bearing by hand and feel everything it is doing. On the other hand, if you purchased the part why not put it in?
Okay guys I changed my wheel bearing and the noise is gone….smooth sailing from hear as I now enjoy nice quiet rides. Thanx guys!!!!
