      So i am at a loss here. My wife’s car runs rough when it is shifted into drive or reverse; however, when its in park or neutral it idles fine. I cleaned the intake way before this started, I have smoke tested it, ran live data and everything checks out. There isn’t any soft or hard faults (no mil) and a stall test yielded perfect at 2,500 rpm. (according to identifix this is well within spec.) I originally thought that since the motor/tranny mounts seem to be problematic with these guys that i’d change them tonight and it still does it!!!!! Anyone had anything like this happen before? Anyone have any advise at all on where to go?? the only thing i know to do is mark TDC on the CSP and hook up a timing light, put it in gear and see if the mark jumps around……

        How many miles on the car? What does the car idle at when running rough?
        Have you checked for vacuum leaks? plugs? Cleaned maf?

            it has 180k, it doesnt change idle very much but ill check this morning, and i have smoke tested it at work with our little machine. havent cleaned the maf yet.

              Does the car drive strong? I’m suspecting fuel related. You may want to get a gauge on it. Now There is a
              problem with the alternator clutch pulley going bad and causing vibration which could be the rough feeling.
              look at the belt as it travels off the alternator in gear em brake on and someone with foot on brake. Look to see
              if the belt is wobbling. Also turn the ac on. The wobble will get worse if its the alt clutch pulley.

                Yes it drives fine……it doesnt have the same torque it had in its younger days but m thinking you are absolutely right about the alternator. ..yes it does stumble with the ac on and the belt doesnt wobble but I do hear a squeaky tiny bearing sound though kinda chirpy….Btw 900 in rev 1200 @idle 900 in drive…..@ open loop cold= rpm however when its in closed loop& upto temp it idles @ 800 in park or neutral and 700 rpm in drive or reverse.

                  I think when I get home im gonna take off the belt and runn the engine long enough to shift into drive n rev. And see if that rough idle stays or disappears

                    keep us posted on your progress. Spin the alt pulley by hand.

                      I got it figured out this week end. The tensioner & water pump pulley both had a little play. The alternator sounds a little rough but not bad. The engine ran alot quiter without the belt on. I did all this in that typhoon that slammed the west coast last friday lol. So should I change the alternator also or should I just wing it and see what happens? Its chargin just fine.

                        So the rough idle went away with the belt off and the car if R or D?

                        You can try it again with the belt on and see what happens, if it comes back, then try the alternator. Do they sell separate alternator pulleys for this model?

                          See what happens without the alternator being changed.
