Hey everybody. My co-worker is having trouble with losing oil from her car. It seems to be leaking out from somewhere. There is no oily smell from the engine bay and it’s not dripping on the engine anywhere and burning. I changed the oil for her a couple weeks ago and 2 days later her oil light came on and she pulled over at a service station and they had to add some oil. That was on a long trip and since then she has driven it very little. I’m going to look at it for her and see if I can find an oil leak anywhere. It has to be on the bottom end somewhere or there would probably be some burning. I’ve been reading a lot where people say that a really common point of failure on these engines (3.9 v6 series 3) is the oil filter adapter gasket. And it kinda seems like I remember oil dripping a little from the oil filter itself before I changed the oil. Any tips on exactly what to look for when I look at this? It seems like most engines are oily on the bottom end when they get aroind 100,000 miles on them. I’ve never diagnosed an oil leak before and would appreciate any advise. And I know the first questions that’s goin to be asked is if I’m sure I tightened the oil filter and drain plug securely and I understand because it’s the exact same question I would ask somebody else. But yes I’m 100% sure because I triple checked them because I was working on somebody else’s car. Thanks everybody

Also if you used synthetic this may have contributed to the increased leakage. More info in the article College man posted.

Okay, I replaced the gasket and so far I don’t see any oil leaks. The gasket fell apart when I took it off so hopefully this fixed the problem. I had read on the internet that somebody suggested taking off the front air dam when doing this to make it easier but it was a huge pita that didn’t help at all. It took like 30 minutes of my time and didn’t open up anything that had to do with the adapter gasket. All that needed to he done is to take off the passenger wheel and there a small plastic cover held on by 3 screw type plastic clips. Once you get that off you have access to 2 of the 3 bolts holding on the ac compressor. After taking off the serpentine belt take out these 2 bolts. Then once under the car with the oil drained and the oil filter off remove the 3rd bolt holding on the ac compressor. One of the first 2 bolts is actually a stud with a nut on it. Slid the compressor off of this nut and move it to the side. Then there’s just 3 bolts holding in the oil filter adapter. One is up out of site and kinda hard to get an angle on. But after that it’s a piece of cake. Thanks everybody for your responses!!
