I have a question about catalytic converters. I have hooked up three different scan tools to watch fuel trim and rear O2 activities both of which are within spec…. the Upstream, as most of you may know it is a wideband oxygen sensor so it doesn’t really pay me any benefit to try to monitor that. So needless to say I think I need a catalytic converter. the techs i work with, a tech I used to work with, and my service writer all say to be careful with aftermarket. the dealership wants 12 to $1,300 I found some on eBay or 100 to $200 I’m probably going to go that route but I was wondering if anyone else had problems that people around me up at Thanks in advance for any opinions or help. The one im leaning toward is called sport motor …its on ebay for $127. 5 yr 50k mile warrenty.

Most of the time cats just don’t die, unless they fall to bits. If fixing the P0420 make sure to give it a tune up if it’s due. My 2000 had called for copper plugs and had a random miss and a P0420. Tune up and a little seafoam in the gas tank it cleared all and ran amazing till the bearing locked up at 253k miles.

I just swapped a used engine into it on the 14th. It has new plugs, wires, aisin timing kit, checked the oil pick up tube, all new fluids and flushes before new fluids including a BG injector clean kit through the fuel tank….very aggressive..all that to be said she should be good to go. I can hear cat rattle plus the wide band is switching low undwr rich and high under lean in proportion to heavy and light throttle the down streams are narrow bands and they are switching high to rich and low to lean. All fuel teims stay within +10-(-10) which is telling me the catalytic converter is clogged. Odly enough upon diassembly of the engine i took out i found bearing failure at the connecting rod journals. It was already rebuilt recently. Whover built it didnt lube the bearings well enough or didnt plastiguage it to check for oil clearence. They also used silicone on the case halves…way to much in spots that tsb’s tell you not to. Plus your suppose to use an anerobic sealer on any case assembly that is split in half such as t cases. I will take some pics and post them in here this weekend. the bearing are narly!….nar nar

I’ve had a claim on a Square warranty and they paid up with no hassle. That was electronics, never tried it with car parts.
