I noticed that my power steering fluid is a milky brown color. While doing suspension work, I noticed that my rack and pinion has a large buildup of thick black oily fluid at the pinion. The fluid isn’t anywhere else but there. I didn’t see any leaks in the lines. BTW, its an 05 Montana SV6 with 110,000 miles on it and it had a bad tie rod that I changed. Thanks!

Unless it’s a line leaking, the only way I know to repair that is to replace the steering rack but unless it’s dripping and you’re having to top it up all the time I wouldn’t worry about it at this time.

You can change the fluid by having it done by a professional or by using a turkey baster to draw fluid from the reservoir and replace it with fresh fluid while the engine is running. You may have to do it several times until it comes clean. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock occasionally while you’re doing it.

Make sure you have lots of steering fluid on hand.
