I have a 05 Pontiac Montana and there is humming coming from the front end. It use to click when I accerlate or braked but now all I hear is constant humming. It changes a little when I turn the wheel but still hums and gets louder the faster I go. I had the alignment done over the summer and new wheel bearings put on hen too. I don’t notice any movement when the car is off the ground and I move the wheel. Not sure what it can be. I thought maybe the cv axles or wheel bearing (they were a cheaper set). Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

A humming sound in most cases means a wheel bearing or possibly an irregular tire tread.
If the tread has any feather edging, cupping, etc the tire can hum.

It’s also possible for a wheel bearing to remain tight and still be faulty. With many car parts anymore it’s difficult to know how long they last and what kind of quality they are.
I’ve found myself replacing parts after comparatively few miles even if they’re name brand.
A lot depends upon the quality of steel used and how it was treated during the manufacturing process.

Today I put the car in the air and put in drive. I heard the humming noise coming from the front drivers side. I seen the cv axle shaking a bit from the part closest to the transmission. Also, the passengers side wheel was not spinning at all until it got up to higher speeds.

wheel bearing, tire, axle if it hums only when moving.

If hums when standing still could be exhaust leak or steering pump

Yes to Kasara_CA… To add, if the wheels were off the ground during the last test, you can rule out the tire(s) as the noise source. Airplane engine type hum?… definitely wheel bearing/hub assembly. I tried to cheap out once with an aftermarket hub. I had to replace it again in several months. I recommend AC Delco only for this part. Good luck.

I agree with the others. Wheel bearings are a problem on those vehicles, especially the cheap replacements. I have good luck with Timken bearings. They are still made in the USA.

Here in Canada we get them from NAPA but I’m not sure about anywhere else. Be sure the axle nut is torqued to spec. Too tight or loose and NO brand of bearing will last.
