Recently my Grand Caravan started to make noise from the front right. It has two BRAND NEW front wheel bearings. I recently got stuck in my driveway when it turned into a mud hole and the noise is a very loud humming sound comming from the right front wheel. Mind you the noise only occours when the wheel has no traction. Driving down the road it’s fine and is quiet. Could this be a CV shaft issue or transmission??

Now could the output shaft bearing be the culprit or is this noise only from the differential?

So I got my answer. The final drive (differential) is on its way out. I have play all over with the CV shaft at the transmission. In and out and rotational play is normal but I can move the shaft up and down in the transmission. This means that either something is worn or has moved from where it’s supposed to be. Luckily the local salvage yard has a transmission with just over half as many miles as my van for $400. Pictures of the new transmission will follow soon.

            Final update on the van!
I was able to get the transmission out and got it partially installed. I ended up coming down with the flu and was unable to finis the job myself so I had a Chrysler dealership finish the job for me. I had the van towed and the dealer had it for about a week. I was in constant contact with them and throughout the week they told me that my flex plate was bent (my fault) and it was only a $50 part so no big deal. Next call was that they had to replace a few bolts that were snapped ($10 all together) again no big deal. I then got a call saying they needed to replace a heater pipe which was $100. Slightly bigger deal but nothing I couldn’t work with. So by the end of the job I had a few new bolts, a new heater pipe, a new flex plate, two new CVs, three new motor mounts, new fluid, new filter, and a new (used) transmission. All together I was up to two weeks of time (mine and the dealers) and just over $2000 in parts and labor. That’s when I got a bad phone call. They told me everything was all together but the car didn’t have reverse… The reality of it was the car had no reverse, moved forward in neutral, no park, no drive gear and only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Plus if you were going around 10mph and put it in reverse and hit the gas you sped up. Needless to say the van is no more because I couldn’t put more money into it. Thankfully however, my dad is the business manager at a different dealership. I traded in the van and I drove off the lot in my new 2008 Scion xD with just under 40k miles on it. The moral of the story is be prepared for the worse if you buy a used transmission!!! And I apologize about the length of the story and thanks for reading!
