so i was driving today and i started to hear a lot of vibrations, also when i was stopped at a light my truck was idling a lot rougher than normal. so i pulled off and checked to see what i could figure out..the reservoir was dry as a bone..dummy move i know. so i fill her up let her cool before i drive it straight home. witch wasnt far and i took it easy. let it cool down. completely, filled radiator and res. its still over heating. no leaks so i dont think i cracked anything. so i guess what im trying to ask is what else could it be. i know theres a coolant pump on the belt witch may be bad, thats really all i know as far as the coolant track goes. my thermostat never worked since i bought the vehicle this winter. is ran great in till today. any helps or explanation of the basic coolant system would be appreciated. my boss is letting me bring it in tomorrow to work on seeing all my tools are at the shop. so the quicker and more replies the better so i can be prepared to buy what ever it is i need to fix this quick.

edit :im pretty sure its the fan clutch and water pump, steam is originating from them. it says the should be replaced together. does any body have any knowledge of weather or not its necessary? im on a very limited budget at the moment and really dont feel like buying something i dont need.
also when i revved the engine the sound sounded like a fan or something rotating when i sped up. and go..

You may want to check that your thermostat isn’t stuck in the closed position. The thermostat works by blocking off coolant until the engine has reached operating temperature, at which point the coolant is allowed to circulate through the engine. If the thermostat is stuck in the closed position, coolant can not flow, causing your engine to overheat.

Since you’re seeing steam around the pump, it could be that the pump bearing seals are shot. The bearings live in a dry area of the pump and aren’t exposed to coolant. When the seals that separate the dry bearing area from your coolant path go bad, the coolant gets into the dry area, and the bearings don’t last long after that. A lot of pumps have a “weep hole” in the dry area of the pump casting. It’s meant to give you a visual indication of pump failure when liquid coolant or steam comes from the hole. Shot pump bearings could explain some of the noise and vibration you experienced.

Another thing you can check is the condition of your bottom radiator hose. A good hose has a spiral stiffener inside it, which prevents the hose from collapsing as coolant is sucked through it by the pump. Those spiral stiffeners have a tendency to corrode over time, allowing the lower rad hose to pinch shut and block coolant flow through the entire coolant system. When the engine has cooled down, grab the lower hose about half way along its length and squeeze firmly. You shouldn’t be able to squeeze the hose shut. If you can, the stiffener is shot and you need a new hose.

thank you both for the replies. i have replaced the thermostate and ordered the water pump. it should be in today. after i changed the thermostat it seems to run a little smoother and the check engine light went away but it is still steaming from around the water pump. i think the gasket may just be bad but if im gonna take it all apart i may as well just replace the pump while im at it. the one i ordered came with the fan clutch assembly. so i will be doing both. i tried to take the pump off when i did the thermostat and could not get it. i have a strap wrench im gonna try next. does any body know if on my model ( 05 ranger 2wd 3.0) if the fan clutch nut is reverse thread or not? the person who answers this i will buy a beer for!! lol
