      I have a 05 Accord V6 with the automatic temperature control system. I want to drain and refill the cooling system. My question is after watching Eric’s video on refilling the coolant system he says to place the heater temp. control knob on High and fan off. With the auto. temp. control system the fan automatically cycles on with temp. on High. Is this OK and nothing to be concerned about ?

      One other question, I was planning on removing the thermostat as part of flush process. On a car with 85K miles would you go ahead and replace thermostat with Honda OEM part at that time although it’s working OK ?

        I think the main reason for turning the heat to full is to open the valve so the coolant flows through the heater core. The fan turning on shouldn’t be a problem.

        If it were me, if the thermostat is in good working condition I wouldn’t replace it. (Boil it in water with a thermometer and see if it opens at the required temperature.) But it wouldn’t be a bad idea to replace it anyway, they aren’t terribly expensive.

          First DON’T flush the system it’s just not necessary, the coolant IS good for 100K and that’s about the time you’ll need a new timing belt and water pump so I would wait till then to address the coolant if you have less than 100K on the car. Next you CAN turn the fan off on the automatic system, just turn the temp to High and turn the fan off or once the fan comes on with the temp on Hot just shut it off, by default it will stay in the mode it was when you last had it on, the important thing you’re doing here is opening up the heater control valve to allow coolant flow through the heater core. Lastly DO NOT remove the thermostat to do this and don’t replace it with anything but an OE unit if it ever shows signs of failure.

          In summary if you have the original OE blue coolant in the system leave it alone till you need to replace the timing belt and water pump and when you do replace it use the blue stuff as you don’t want to mix it with green and it will be good for another 100K. BTW all we ever did at the dealer was drain and refill coolant we never ‘flushed’ anything as it was not necessary if there aren’t any deposits in the system and if you use the OE coolant it’s not likely you’ll ever find any deposits that would require flushing.

            Thanks for that advice and tips about not flushing the system. The OE blue coolant is still in the system so I will just change when the timing belt and water pump is replaced at 100K.

            Also thanks for all that you do related to this website and advice that you offer to others. I always learn something from the forums and your videos. Great bunch of people offering their advice as well.
