The positive battery terminal has corroded to the point were it’s making starting the car difficult. Last night I thought my battery was dead since whenever I tried to crank the engine nothing would happen and all the lights inside the car went out. I checked under the terminal cap and found the worst corrosion I’d ever seen, which is impressive since I’d just cleaned the outside of it a month ago and that the time that the worst I’d ever seen. For some reason cleaning only the outside of the terminal fixed the problem. The terminal is a “hat” type where rather than just clamping around the terminal on the battery, in completely encapsulates it, so going and getting a puller is not an option. I’ve tried wet baking soda and twisting it with pliers (not very hard since I didn’t want to break it) and neither worked. I’ve heard WD-40 might work but I’m weary to try it. I’d rather not have to resort to cutting it off the wiring and just getting a new battery since the battery is still good. Anyone got any ideas?

      Thanks

Wire brush everything clean and use either the wd or penetrating oil to help break it free.
Then use brake clean to rid any oil residue.

Might first start with cleaning the battery with baking soda and water and a brush to remove as much of the corrosion as possible
Can you use a terminal removal tool ?

Tried the water and baking soda long ago and it didn’t work. Unless that threaded stud coming out the top is actually part of the battery and not the wiring then I don’t see any way a puller would work. I’ve never seen a battery with a threaded stud on the positive terminal, but it would make more sense that that’s how this holds together. And yes everything I’ve tried has been with the nut off, that’s a mistake you only make once. I sprayed it with WD-40 Rust Release, which has penetrating oil in it and I’m going to let it soak in for a while and try again.

Let it soak then try to undue it. sometimes trying to tighten the loosen works. go
easy and keep spraying. Usually a marine battery has the studs for the terminals.
