HELP needed!!!! About a month ago my car started having starting issues. It will crank over fine but wont fire.So I cycle the fuel pump over and over and try again and again. Eventually it will start but it runs badly then it sounds fine after a couple minutes. Kicker is if you shut it off and go into the store for something it may not start for 30 min to an hour when you return to it, but if you leave it running you may come out to it running really sluggish. sometimes it runs great while driving, and sometimes not.

Symptoms ive noticed while driving it are:
-loss of speed/poiwer going up hills
-surging when trying to speed up
-miss firing/backfiring when pedals got on
-sluggish running – cant speed up over 20-25mph at all
this happened to me yesterday afterwork and it took 2 1/2 hours tell it finally worked again
-also im now hearing a clicking sound coming from the area of the coil pack/distributor

Please if you have any helpful suggestions of what to try next I could really use them as its our only vehicle.

      Update:
I replaced the fuel pump relay, tapped on the injectors, cleaned the Mass Air Flow Sensor, cleaned up the Throttle Body, and replaced the plug wires like in the videos I have watched.
—Today im going to check the plugs for failure signs/possibly just replace them all, and replace the fuel filter.

Is the check engine light on? check the fuel pressure
regulator on the fuel rail. pull the vacuum line to see
if fuel comes out. Try and start the car and do the same
        test.

yes check engine light is on. i have pulled the vacuum line off while not running and running. No gas at all seems to be coming out there

-I went for a drive tonight. started out fine then went to get on interstate and it just sputtered and wouldnt excell at all. i pulled over and unplugged the MAF Sensor plug. got back in and it sputtered away and then took off down the highway. Still unable to get on it good when taking off and passing cars. It just hesitates tell you let off the pedal.
-i just had neighbor hook up his code scanner and its reading 1 or more bad fuel injectors, and #1 bank is running lean.
-Also it has a Fuel Regulator from a 3.1L engine in it. Has been in it for about 15 months and it ran great up tell a month ago.

Can injectors be fixed by cleaning them? Did the 3.1L fuel regulator mess up my injectors? Any advice and Help is appreciated.. Thanks

Sounds to me like your fuel filter is plugged or the fuel pump is getting ready to take a permanent nap.

You need to check the fuel pressure with the appropriate gauge.

will do that. just bought me a complete but wrecked 04 Impala for $200. will know tomorrow exactly what the problem was as im gonna switch out every part i can..

Well it starts better now but there is still a problem. I replaced the Injectors, MAF sensor, and the Fuel Regulator.

I plugged and unplugged the MAF sensor and the idle changes so im pretty sure its working.

With MAF sensor plugged in —It will rev up in Park or Nuetral just fine, but when i put it in Drive and go to take off it sputters/acts like its miss firing, then it out of it and takes off, but a few blocks down the road it losses all power and just sputters like crazy.

With MAF sensor unplugged — same thing in Nuetral and Park. Put it in Drive and it sputters a little and then takes off and runs great.

Plus i have noticed a clicking sound coming from the area of the Coil Packs. Could i possibly have a coil pack going out?

What was your CEL code? Have you replace your fuel filter as wysetech suggested (unless you’ve done this recently). Also plug in a fuel pressure gauge (the Schrader valve right on your fuel rail) and check your pressure. Does it drop quickly after turning the car off. Also repeat this with the return line pinched. This well give you information if the fuel pump is bad/good. Check your air filter as well and make sure no debris is in your case and look for bad vacuum hoses.

                  For your ignition coils:

on way to parts store for fuel filter and new spark plugs now.. Ill get the CEL while im there. Air Filter is new. see if they can test my fuel pressure also.. Post results in a little while.

It would be a good idea to pull that code and also check the fuel pressure. A little diagnosis can go a long way to solve performance problems. More info here.

After changing it all and reseting the Light it only pops up with one code. A Mass Air Flow sensor code. says its low volt or something like that. Is the MAF controlled by the BCM in my 04 Impala

Before you replace your MAF sensor, follow through on testing it. As Collegeman said in your other post, the ECM controls the MAF.

You can try cleaning it as well as they can occasionally have buildup

If it proves bad, MAF sensors are expensive. There are shops online that sell used MAF factory sensors if you don’t want aftermarket

Getting closer to a solution. Seems to be running better, but still iffy starting with first turn of the key and excellerating quickly. Since I have a matching Impala for parts I decided to just replace alot of it.
As soon as i shift from park to drive it instantly starts to miss fire and tries to die.

too add too what has been repeated a thousand times a very common failure that causes these drivability issues with W body GM Cars such as yours and even H body GM cars such as yours is a loss of fuel pressure due too a bad fuel pump, this will cause all the drivability issues you are experiencing.

a bad MAF sensor can cause drivability issues but everyone is spot on, this sounds like a fuel system issue something i have experienced first hand… check your fuel pressure like eric said… if fuel pressure is low it wont kill anything too change the fuel filter. then test your fuel regulator, if your fuel gauge is fluxuating and innacurate too tell fuel level i am willing too put money on that fuel pump is bad.

testing fuel regulator except fuel pressure for your car will not be 60, spec is more like 50PSI, this is a good time too see if your fuel pump is bad, if your fuel pressure primes slowly too spec or is below 50PSI suspect a bad fuel pump. VERY common issue with your car and many other GM W body cars.

if you have too change the fuel pressure regulator, same engine as your car.

if fuel pressure is about 50PSI if your fuel pump primes up fuel pressure slowly, too far below 50PSI i would suspect the fuel pump, bad part about that is you will probably have too drop the gas tank too get to it.
