My 04 wj a few months ago on the way home my power steering when i turned to the left stopped working. The jeep only has 42000 mile on her.
I replaced the steering box from autozone. A few days latter the pump went also. Replaced from auto zone .Well replaced the steering box three times one pitman arm seal blew out the 2nd was no better the 3rd must of had an accident damage as the shaft was bent. Also form day one the rebuilt pump made some much noise as it was low of fluid but it was not low bleed the hell out of it and just could not get it to be quite. Found out from auto zone that they use a1 cardone as their rebuilder. So that answered my question as to why none of this parts were any good. So I found a brand New steering box and a brand new pump from Crown. The new pump is 100 time quiet can not hear it at all. The box seams to work BUT when stopped and trying to park its a little stiff. the power is there but not as easy as my wives jeep And yes I am using mopar power steering fluid
My wives 04 with 89000 miles on it I can turn the wheel with my little finger. My sons 02 has 134000 and I can turn it with my little finger also. I am told that as this is a new box just drive it and around 5/600 mile later it will free up ( it needs to break in) I never heard of having to break in a steering box
back in the 60s cardone had a bad name as to rebuilding stuff I can’t believe they are still in business today. I wasted so much time with this mess If I knew this in the first place I would have NEVER went with auto zone
Has any one heard or can tell me that my new box needs to break in?? Will get better the more I drive it

With the front end off the ground. can you move the wheels by pushing
them with your hands? You will need the key on engine off to do this.

yep no problems there can do it with one hand
Think I am going to run it for a few weeks and see what happens

Not all parts are created equal as you have found out. I would also lube any parts of the steering that are serviceable and make sure your tire pressures are correct.

            Keep us posted.

If it has the 4.7 engine, the power steering pump is also connected to the cooling fan. Sometimes problems with the hydraulic fan solenoid can affect the steering.

ok here is whats going on with my grand cherokee
The brand new steering box got so bad that it first locked up then when I got it free it kept turning to the left by itself
witch i have to say is a scary thing when you are driving.I got so sick of messing with it so went to the junk yard and picked up a used box for 75 bucks pulled it all apart flushed the pump and hoses really good and installed the used box
Well all is now well with my jeep no more problems .
SO what caused all this I took that new box apart and this is what I found First there is a brass sleeve for the pitman arm shaft that was not fitted right and was getting torn up leaving a lot of small bras particles in the spool valve # 2 when they built this box and cut the threads for the pressure hoses some of that thread cutting ended up in side the box as I found some threads residue in the spool valve
SO they were in some hurry in building this box
so Now I am starting to think of installing a power steering filter on the return line but no body seem to sale them Online they do but no has them locally
If i had a filter on the power steering in the first place I just might not had all of these problems
I guess today every one is in a hurry and making a buck and NOT caring about a good quality job getting done
