I have a 2004 grand am se with the 2.2L
for a day of driving around the engine would intermittantly run very rough and the check engine light would blink for a few minutes then would stop blinking and car ran fine…
this happenned several times that day, then finally the check engine light stayed on.
anyone have any suggestions on what it could be?

Most are going to suggest getting the check engine light codes and report back 🙂

Gives us all somewhere to start off.

Bad idle I would think vacuum leak, o2 sensors or something to that nature. Could be a million things.

        *edit*
forgot to add, to get the code checked free autozone, napa or a similar parts store. If you look online or call local auto repair shops most of them will do a simple code read for free as well. (Chances are good the mechanic will suggest whats wrong when he checks so you may get the repair done there)

Not sure if itll work but its worked on most of the cars Ive owned. Quick and easy.

Its the paperclip method to pull up your CEL codes. (so you dont need a scanner or to go to a store)

            http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_i_check_grand_am_check_engine_codes

            “Paper-clip method:
Install a jumper wire or paper clip between the last and second to last terminals from the left on the top row of the ALDL connector with ignition turned on. These are the first and second terminals from the right side of the top row of the connector. The check engine light will flash codes. The first code flashed will be 12 indicated by flash (1) pause flash flash (2) pause. Codes will be flashed twice before moving on to the next code. After all codes are flashed, code 12 will repeat. Three consecutive 12s indicate no codes.

Some older models do not flash 12 if there are codes present. “

ok i got a code reader and this is what it came up with…

              P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)

I would guess that u might have a spark plug or wire misfiring. Or a Air take sensor or valve need to be replaced. hope this helps.
