      Hi all. I have an ’04 Explorer 4×4 4.0 V6 vin K (flex fuel) with 150k on the clock. Its been a great truck, but it now occasionally hesitates upon acceleration and then has a weird clunk before going back to normal. I took it to a tranny shop, expecting the transmission and he said it was an occasional engine miss, but I have no check engine light. I then took it to my main mechanic and he said there is no engine miss or trans issues. He said it was probably a fuel delivery issue. We’ve swapped the fuel filter, added fuel system cleaner. I also replaced the MAF sensor. What’s next? Plugs and wires are all recent. Any suggestions? Please no “Exploder and stay away from Ford” talk. I’ve had excellent luck with Fords and currently own 3 and they’ve all been great to me.

          I too call them exploders but really they are no better or worse than most other vehicles. That said I did work one once that had an occasional misfire after I replaced the plugs and wires. It was only when it shifted into overdrive on an incline. It was very violent and it caused the driveline to clunk while it was happening. It never produced any fault codes or service engine light as it was very intermittent.

          To make a very long diagnostic story short, # 3 spark plug boot had a very small piece of silver coated heater case padding stuck between the plug wire boot and the spark plug porcelain that cased the spark to jump down the side of the plug to ground The rear plug on the passenger side is very hard to get to so I guess I accidently scraped some of the padding off while working in there. It even caused a black carbon track on the porcelain. After removing the piece of padding and replacing the spark plug the problem was cured.

          I would inspect the plugs carefully for signs of spark leaking to ground.

              No luck with the throttle cleaning but it couldn’t hurt. I replaced all the spark plug wires and it seems to have fixed the issue. I didn’t see a nick in any of the wires but who knows. So far so good. Thanks to you both!
