      used starter fluid it fired

I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key

      checked fuses 32,33,34 all good

don’t know how to check relay

Chilton book says that if ignition is not sending pulses to PCM the PCM will turn off the fuel pump in 2 seconds

any suggestions, or past experiences like this?

bought a fuel pressure gauge, doing my best to follow it out logically
I want to know how much voltage I can use to check a relay can I jumper off the battery or should I use a lower voltage battery ? I don’t want to ruin a good relay

I have power to the starter, I have spark, I have fuel pressure albeit I am not sure exactly how much but give me an hour or two and I will be back with the numbers

Is there anything else I should check for???

If it will start and run on starter fluid then I think you have the answer – no fuel. It has an rpm signal or there would be no spark. That also tells you the electronics controlling spark are working. So it could be fuel pump or injector pulse. Well, there is also empty gas tank.

I put 3 gallons in on Saturday, that didn’t fix it, too bad

What has me troubled is that I do not understand what determines if the PCM decides to turn off the fuel pump, or not

I am not sure of the actual fuel pressure just yet, but the fuel pump is loading the fuel rail

Changed the brake switch and it started right up….I finally executed something Eric taught me, I was beginning to wonder if I ever would I will keep everybody posted

it ran for about 15 minutes, drove it to a friends(1 block) house to return some tools on the way back it died and wont start again

I cannot find a removable fuel filter

I am going to check the new brake switch though the brake lights are working

I tried to upload a video of it running but could not get the site to respond, I am just as ignorant about technology as mechanics, so if someone could help me on to be able to upload I would appreciate it

Yeah, I’d keep looking around or at that switch. Maybe during the swap you bumped or jiggled a loose connection.

There is an inertia switch on fords/lincolns/mercurys of that year if I recall that are designed to shut off the fuel pump in the event of an accident. While running a compression test on these vehicles, I actually disconnect this switch to kill the fuel. Perhaps it is intermittently malfunctioning? Just a thought.

you know that was a very good idea, and at some point somebody had been messing with that switch, indicating that this may have been an issue previously.

                        I pressed the switch, nope

I guess I can check the circuit and see

I am really wondering about the fuel pressure, I bought a gauge but my friend told me it doesn’t measure enough pressure
So I am going to get the right one and check that

It’s important to cover the basics when dealing with a no start. Perhaps I missed it but I haven’t seen where you’ve checked for spark and fuel when the problem occurs. That would be step one. Up to this point you’ve been focused on a fuel delivery issue when it could just as easily be a spark problem. As pointed out when you replaced the brake light switch you could have moved something and restored a connection. Given the proximity to the ignition switch wiring, you might also check the operation of the ignition switch. If it’s not sending out the correct signals it can cause a no start condition. I was able to start it again, it ran well for 15 minutes, ran less well then I pushed the gas and it died, wouldn’t start.

I have continued this thread under a different post as the symptoms have changed.

Runs really well then dies(03 Navig. continued)… please stop by with thoughts and suggestions
