My protege auto tranny acts like it slips when pulling out or it is just not going into gear.Does not do it all the time.I pull out and rpms shoot up and I let off gas then press the gas again and car seems to go into gear and or stop slipping and I continue on my way.Previous owner says it did this to him and he did same thing and drove it this way.We have put acouple thousand miles on this while doing this.Fluid level seems ok.Previous owner says he dowes not remember when or if he ever had fluid changed other than when the tranny was replaced under factory warranty about 95k ago.Don’t think changing fluid would do any good. That may cause more issues.Any thoughts.

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid?

No, and I’m probably not going to.I posed that question earleir on here and most say not to on a tranny that has not been maintained.Have been told in the past by a tranny shop that on older cars that have never had tranny fluid changed it would be better left till it goes. The dirty fluid with the grit from the clutch plates is what is making it work at this point and putting clean fluid in could cause more harm than good.I read all the time about people getting tranny’s flushed after way too many miles and have slipping, squeeling and not shifting properly.

What color is the fluid at this point ? With high milage and no regular maintenance I would not change the fluid. you are correct in assuming the disks are worn and the clean out would probably leave the trans inoperatable. I would just baby it when driving and then do a replacement when it finally fails.

It sounds like you pretty much already know your options, if the fluid is at the proper level and doesn’t have any bubbles in it you could either change the fluid and filter and take a chance on killing it off for good or leave it as it is till it fails completely. There really is little you can do beyond that to be honest.

This car is for my new teenage driver and we will see how long it gets babied!!Would have rather had a manual, but for her it would of been a bad idea I think.I see a big tranny bill in the future, but maybe it will last awhile. We put about 3k miles on it so far like this.

Sounds like it might have low pressure (not a trans specialist) or a weak shift solenoid.
I’m going to have to agree with everyone else on this, Baby it and see how much longer it will last.I:|

You might try a transmission conditioner to see if that helps, just make sure you follow the instructions to get the best results.
