Is there a check engine light on indicating any shift solenoid issues? How does the fluid look, full or does it look and smell burnt?

How many miles are on the trans?

Does the issue only occur when it is cold or does it occur also when the fluid in the trans is also warm?

Considering that it gets better after it warms up it could indicate a mechanical issue. You might want to change the fluid and filter and put some trans conditioner in there just to give that a shot to see if that changes they way it behaves, if it does then you can reasonably assume that it’s not an electronic issue but rather a mechanical one and i’m sure you have a pretty good idea where you will be going from there if it gets worse.

I would make sure that you’re running genuine licensed Chrysler ATF+4 Fluid and not universal fluid.

Chrysler is very strict on their spec licensing as ATF+4 is more grabby than other fluids like Merc and Dex. Using other fluids will cause a significant amount of slippage. Fresh ATF+4 straight out of the bottle smells like vomit unfortunately.

These are the only licened replacements for original fluid:

You need to check the detent (kick down cable) and make sure it is adjusted right. You will probably need a line pressure gauge to set it just right. Seek a professional if you don’t have the tools, it shouldn’t cost much.
If the line pressure is right but still hangs in 1st gear then the trans will have to come out and be rebuilt as there is a snap ring broken.
