I keep hearing a whining noise coming from under my hood. I realized that it gets louder as I turn the wheel (power steering). It almost sounds like the belt is slipping, but the belt shows no signs of over heating. I have adjusted the belt tension 5 times already and the sound keeps coming back. (although it does seem to stop whenever I adjust the belt tension, but that might just be a coincidence.) I took the belt off and spun the pully and it feels and sounds fine. What could be wrong??

Did you check the PS fluid level? Not trying to be smart, I owned a Jetta that was slowly losing PS fluid. If I forgot to check it for a few months I got the PS whine reminder message.

Sorry, forgot to mention the fluid level.

The fluid level is slightly above the “lower level” line on the reservoir. So I didn’t think this was low, there is still plenty of fluid in the reservoir itself and it doesn’t go below this level when the engine is running.

Really stumped on this! The belt looks fine, the pulley feels fine, the fluid level seems fine. I don’t know what else could be wrong except the pump itself being bad.

Not sure if you have seen this vid, but its a great start

Also, there might be some air in the system, which then you would have to flush it. Depending on how many miles you have on the car, it might not be a bad idea to replace the p/s pump if its never been done before.

usually the whining is from a failing pump. could be something minor though.

+1 on the above video, it is a great place to start.
