Well, this has been one nightmare after another troubleshooting my overheating issues. Haha. Many things have been fixed, however this is the one I’m hung up on now.
Cooling fan was working fine earlier in the week as I was doing some flushing, thermostat and pressure cap swaps, etc. (all verified bad :/) Now suddenly I’m pulling a P0480: “Cooling Fan Relay 1 Control Circuit”, and the fan won’t engage even at 103C. I can’t get it to engage with the AC either, although that doesn’t surprise me as I can’t get the AC compressor to engage either. A project for another day.
Here’s what I’ve verified thus far:
– Fan will engage when directly wired to +12v, although there is about a one second lag before doing so.
– Fan harness doesn’t seem to have a short, as bridging the relay contacts in the fuse box also engage it (with the same lag), however not if I have my DVM in the circuit, which is odd.
– Relay and fuse in the fuse box have been verified functional.
– Temp gauge works, as well as the temp reporting through the OBDII port.
– Relay coil posts in fuse box show ~13.5v, system has 14v across battery terminals. Relay doesn’t engage in terminals, yet it does fine jumped on the battery.
Any suggestions? I’m really at a loss here. It seems odd that this just happened during all my cooling system maintenance,. so I’m assuming I’ve just spilled coolant on something or knocked it loose, damned if I can find it though..
