Just recently, I had to put 10w-40 in my truck because I needed oil bad and could’nt drive to the store to get any it was that low. Well anyways, the truck would start fine run fine then all of a sudden yesturday morning it was really cold and the truck wouldn’t start. It would crank, fire a few times and die. Got a new battery today and it eventually fired and had a really really loud knocking it ain’t ever had before. After awhile it calmed slightly but I could still hear it. Then I took it for a drive around the block and it went away completely. The oil level is about 1.5 quarts above the limit because it wouldn’t register on the dipstick and it eventually showed up higher than the top hole. It usually has 5w-30 by the way. Any explanations, tips, etc.

It’s possible that the valve lifters got some air in them from the oil level being low. I would have the oil changed and 5w30 put back in. Keep an eye on the level and add oil when needed.

Thanks. ‘Im just worried. Now, in the summertime, since the truck burns oil on start up, could I or should I put in 10w-40 back in to help fill in the gaps since the engine’s worn? I’ve had the truck for 12 years now. Shes got 150,000. Also, could anything happen if I don’t change the oil back to 5w-30? In addition, could anyone explain what’s causing the knocking? The knocking isn’t the valve lifters, it sounds like it’s from the bottom like a rod knock. The lifter / valve train is noisy (taps) so I think that’s what you, Wysetech, thought the knocking was correct me if i’m wrong though.

How cold was it and how much oil did you add? In extremely cold temperatures conventional 10W-40 oil may not pump. This would be indicated by zero oil pressure on the oil pressure gauge. In this situation attempts to start the engine should cease.

It was about 6 degrees and the oil pressure was fine. Even though the gauge doesn’t work I could tell. It was castrol 10w-40. I added about 2.5-3 quarts of oil. The oil is a bit over but should be fine.

Alright, changed the oil back so High Mileage 5w-30 and trucks runs great now. No rough ilde anymore either.
