Hi guys, when I did an oil change on my Cavi recently I had to take the AIT out to get to the oil filter housing (for those of you not familiair the Ecotec 2.2s have the filter up top under a plastic cap but you typically have to pull the intake tubing to get access to it). Anywho I disocvered oil in the AIT. The car has always driven fine and I havnt had a Check Engine Light on it. Im trying to remember what oil in the AIT means. It usually means a bad PCV valve correct ?

          Hi ChrisR1987,

Yes, I would start with the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. Extract the PCV valve and ensure that it rattles when you shake it. Check the PCV’s passage way for any clogged debris too. If the PCV doesn’t rattle and is plugged, I always recommend replacing with a dealer part. It should not cost too much more, and the dealer part has the extract orifice specifications on the PCV for your vehicle. Hope the PCV valve is easy to get to.

I would also recommend checking the air filter too for oil. Keep us posted.

Thanks BigC no I didnt notice any oil on the Air Filter or its box itself it was just sitting there in the AIT itself. Not a whole lot.

It may be normal as many times as an engine gets older it has more blow by and as a result you may see things like that. It really depends on how much oil, if it wasn’t that much I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

The Ecotec does not have a replaceable PCV valve, but an internal reed style PCV valve inside the intake manifold. Some oil seems normal inside the resonator but I am not sure how it can get into the air intake tube. As long as the engine is not using any oil you are fine. Ecotecs should not burn or leak any oil but keep an eye of the oil level just in case.

I would recommend checking and changing out the PCV breather hose between the resonator and the cam cover if it is cracked and/or oily. Plus you can get a lot of crud build up inside the hose. IIRC the hose is a piece of 15/32″ emissions hose that cost about $1.19 a foot at Autozone or a $5 molded hose from the dealer.

P.S. Are you using a proper 32mm oil filter socket? These cost about $9 at O’reileys for the Lisle brand socket and $12 at Autozone for a generic socket. This may allow you to remove the filter without moving the AIT and risking damage to the IAT wiring.

Thx Killman and Eric. It wasnt a lot of oil and the cavi hasnt been using oil that Ive noticed. I just honestly used a monkey wrench and gently worked the lid loose thus the reason to remove the AIT. The only thing Im not understanding is the whole blow by? Can someone elaborate on that?

As the engine wears more combustion gas will slip past the piston rings and as a result it will burn more oil but also the oil will find it’s way into the intake and settle out as a result. This happens on ALL engines as they get older so it’s nothing you have done wrong or could prevent. Regular oil changes with the correct oil is your best bet but even then it will still happen to some degree.
