So I just acquired a 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 with around 170-180k miles on it. (I forget exactly as it was a desperation buy needed before monday) Passed test drive and bought. But then throws a code before it’s even 15 miles down the road bringing back home – misfiring on cylinders 1, 3, and 6 over and over again suddenly after a sudden jerk-stumble. No other codes (or sensors).

Autozone’s OBD 2 suggests just put in new plugs at about this mileage and gives an ultra hard sell that if I dont buy iridium it will literally DESTROY MY ENGINE.

Is this just horses___ or is there some legitimate reason? Honda supposedly recommends iridium from the factory, and at the moment I didn’t know if i’d be driving this car for only a very short period or what (until I could get others back to running shape) so i’m not looking for a 200,000 mile plug here. Autozone refused to recommend any noniridium plug as even an option.

Wires I didn’t yet buy but I knew that could also contribute to a misfire and I dont know if they’ve been replaced since new.

Why is iridium a thing and does it really matter that much? Would any iridium plug be equally good (ie Bosch) or is there a reason to go others?

Best to put in exactly what the manufacturer calls for, usually NGK or Nippondenso for Hondas. You can find dealers that sell parts online at a discount or someplace like sparkplugs.com.

The 2003 may not have wires, probably has coil over plug. Honda used to date code their wires, the date of manufacture would be on the wire itself.

Not sure of your plug # but Iridium ones (NGK, Denso) for a 2003 Accord run $5 to $11 each. If you don’t want to buy those you could always take a plug or two or 3 out of the cylinders that are missing, and swap them with the ones that are not missing. If the Code moves to another cylinder then you know the plug is bad.
