Hello and thanks in advance for reading! I’ve got the new timing belt into my ’02 Forester and am trying to perform the final check before installing the timing belt cover and crank pulley. So, starting out, all 3 marks are aligned properly; 2 camshaft marks and the crank mark are setting right on. Eric’s Worst Video recommends I should now spin the crankshaft one turn and the marks should, again, line up. Mine do not; the 2 camshaft sprocket marks are now sitting at 6:00 o’clock which is 180 degrees from where they should be. So, my question is this – you really have to spin the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions to get all 3 marks to line up again, correct?

        Two turns is correct.

Thanks College Man! Got it all back together, runs like a champ. Problem is twofold; can’t torque the crank bolt to the specified 130 ft. lbs. ’cause it spins on me(will take it to a shop), and it’s overheating. Argh! Am I going to have to re-undo ALL to get back at the water pump and t-stat I changed out? Or, do I just need to properly “burp” the coolant system? Anyway, thanks for your confirmation on the 2 revs. I should have known; the crank sprocket is 1/2 the size of the camshaft sprockets. So, of course you’d have to spin the crank X 2 to affect the camshaft by 360 degrees. Thanks!

Well, I doubt there is a problem with a brand new water pump. The thermostat you can get to without touching the belts. BTW, the thermostat goes in with the sensor part towards the engine. In other words, upside down as compared to a thermostat that goes into the top of an engine.

So, I’d say, if it wasn’t overheating before, either the thermostat is in backwards or there is air in the engine. Anyway, just to be sure the thermostat is working, what ever way you find it mounted, put it in a pan of water on the stove and watch if it opens.

I would try and bleed the cooling system first to see if that
solves the overheating issue. here is the procedure.

Thanks bb it didn’t dawn on me I could get at the t-stat w/o removing the belts. I’ll definitely check out my installation if an air bleed doesn’t solve the problem.

College Man thanks for the links to the excellent procedures re overheating problems. My “garage” consists of a patch of gravel under a large Maple tree next to a shed in my backyard. Once the rain stops my next step will be to bleed the system. Thanks again!

BarneyB thanks! In fact, I had the new thermostat in upside down. Reversed it, filled it up with coolant, burped it, ran it hard. No overheating! Thanks much! – Dirk

ETCG thanks! BTW, loved your intro to the “Worst Video Ever…Subaru Timing Belt..”. The “I look like a dork because…” cracked me up. Also, earlier I had mentioned not being able to torque the crank pulley bolt to the specified 130 ft. lbs. Bought a $25 “pulley holder”, a large thing for $25 at Advance Auto. Worked fine. I’ll definitely use it again; other 2 cars in the “fleet” are due soon. Thanks again. Nice site! Nice folks!
