I have a 2002 awd mercury moutaineer with 150000 miles on it, on a straight road it drives great, but when making tight left or right turns it feels like it is binding and you have to give it more gas. When I try driving in circles I can hear one front tire skidding intermittently, I was told that because all four tires are not the same that is what is causing my problem, is this true, cant anyone help me please

I know on 4wd when turning you get like a binding feeling. On awd it
may be the axles or awd. If the tires are the correct size but mis matched
I don’t see where it would cause a binding.

Sounds like it’s in 4WD. You should only drive in 2WD on dry pavement. Only use 4WD when off road or on wet pavement.

Tire size is also important as College man mentioned.

on a 2002 Ford explorer that has the 4×4 “auto” hi and low on the switch, it has to have the exact same tires and size, or that happens.

i went through this over one tire wearing due to an alignment issue, it would bind and pop and crack, because the system on the car thought it was “slipping, or loosing traction” because of the different ratios on the tire rotations, and put the thing in 4×4 Automatically.

it wasnt anything special just a run of the mill ford explorer (2002 model). i know the two are almost identical. just my .02 cents.

            good luck!

sorry, meant to say the ford explorer was a AWD vehicle as well, and the reference being, even if they are the same size tires, with different tread wear depth, the system on that car is so sensitive it detects that as a slippage.

i had to buy 4 new tires for it,
              problem went away.

Someone in my family has an 05 version of your truck. It’s awd all the time, no option to switch to 2wd. Tire scrub is the common term.to describe your situation.
IF the tires are all four the same size, then make sure the air pressure is not off somehow. Tire scrub is an inevitability of any vehicle that is full time 4wd.
If any of your tires are a different size, that can damage either differential and/or the transmission and transfer case too. Stay on top of your tires situation. Odd sized tires ruined the rear differential on this 05 and I had to swap it out last summer, junkyard cost was $500 plus the PITA to do the job.

Thank you all for your advice, it is a AWD with no selection switch for 4×4 or rear wheel drive, I have noticed that the tires are not the same so I will have to take care of that problem first, thank you all once again and I will keep you informed
