Hello again forum followers. FrankS here, asking a question about my aunt’s car. It’s an 02 Ford Taurus that is having a heater problem. The local shop wants $600 in labor alone to fix it and well she doesn’t have that. So I’m reaching out to the forum to see if I can possibly fix it for her. Apparently, the fans work fine but very little heat is being produced. Can anyone direct to what is wrong and where to look as far as instructions on replacing it? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

      Frank from Pittsburgh

First i would check anti freeze level, then maybe thermostat is bad, if that is ok then i would check blend door…Hopefully someone with experience can tell you how to do these things if u don’t know how …but it’s a start..

              Hi FrankS,

Ensure that both hoses to and from the heater core are hot (once the engine is at operating temperature). If both the inlet and outlet hoses to the heater core are hot (similar in temperature), then the issue is not with the heater core itself. If the inlet heater hose is hot, but the outlet heater hose is much cooler in temperature, then the heater core is plugged.

                +1 to everyones suggestion.

Have you had any work done to the cooling system recently or any issues such as leaks?

If it is plugged then like the other guys said, try flushing it using Eric’s method on his video. If that doesn’t work and you have to remove it, these guys did a great video on that car:

Eric uses compressed air. In case you don’t have compressed air just use a garden hose w/nozzle and a rag around it so you don’t spray yourself in the face. For those of us who don’t have compressors a garden hose nozzle works just fine. Make sure to drain and store the coolant properly before flushing. Don’t want to kill any pets. That stuff is super poisonous to cats and dogs. Don’t let them lick up a single drop of coolant. Grandma’s usually have pets, you don’t want that on your conscience.

I’d also like to add that it’s a good idea to check for air in the cooling system as this can also cause the heat not to function properly. Good luck and keep us posted.
