The 4WD seems to be stuck on. You can feel it dragging when you turn a corner. The electrical switch is working as it should, as checked at the rotary blade coupling at the differential. When the switch is operated nothing can be heard at the coupling when under the car. When the car is off the ground the rear wheels will spin the drive shaft, indicating the coupling is engaged when it shouldn’t be. What kind of a job is it to separate the coupling from the differential and swap it with a used one? Only 6 bolts but the book time seems over generous with no real details of what this job entails

I believe there are two modes auto and manual. check that the switch is not in manual. Is the 4wd light
on?The switch, just to the left of the temp controls, says 2WD/4WD. when placed in 4WD it lights 4WD in the cluster. Power at coupling in 4WD, no power in 2WD. When under car having an assistant operate switch nothing can be heard at the coupling.
Could be a fuse or the motor that engages the four wheel drive (on the transfer case) has gone bad. have someone hit the four wheel drive switch while you watch the current with a multimeter. If you see a current change then pull the motor and have them hit the switch again. If the motor does nothing, than it’s probably a bad motor.
This vehicle is a FWD with a drive shaft coming from the trans to an electrically operated coupler Ford calls a Rotary Blade Coupling. The switching mechanism checks out ok. I’m really trying to find out how much of a job it is to change the coupling. It looks straight forward; remove drive shaft, drain differential, remove 6 bolts. Book time is 3.8 hrs. From my many years of experience that’s way too generous. I can’t seem to find more info than that. I have a used diff with the coupling being delivered tomorrow.
