      2002 civic ex 4 door side srs 1.8L 1.7L
Is making a continuous minor rattling and sometimes a louder chuggling sound from the alternator a/c compressor area, when idling, and the chuggling is getting worse now..
It sounds like a loose pulley or worn internals of the alternator.
I’m using a stethoscope to try to pin down the area making the noise, but so far the rattling sound seems most noticiable from the alternator
but the chuggling sound hasn’t happened again yet while I’ve been listening through the stethoscope.
I’m using the civic forum DIY A./C system post to get better access to the area.

any suggestions or links to previous similar post much appreciated
      thanks
I can post a short video tonight if that will help

The easiest first step is usually to remove the belt and confirm the noise is gone. From there you can spin the various pulleys by hand to feel and listen for any irregularities. You can also try cycling your AC to see if that changes the noise.

          Thanks DaFirnz
          This etcg video OtherEngineCompartmentNoises https://youtu.be/0UY35PUdv2c
seems to me to be close to what my sounds are like. Also in the civic I have to remove the power steering pump belt before I can get at the alternator and a/c compressor belt. I got a video today but only of the rattling noise. I also misplaced my camera battery charger and the battery ran out of juice. Sure enough when the chuggling noise started this evening I went to grab my camera than remembered the battery was dead.
Hope to get some more video and progress tomorrow

I found my camera battery charger and got a decent video of the noise. I can now see the culprit, or at least one of the culprits. The a/c compressor pulley barring. The pulley is wobbling when the intermittent noise shows up and it showed up nicely for me last night. On and off at idle for several minutes.

I found this video today AC Clutch Repair and Noise Diagnosis https://youtu.be/j7yflp1WFrU
The only differences I’ve noticed so far with mine are that intermittent chuggling from the pulley is way louder when it happens and
the noises are the same when a/c is on and off.
Makes me fairly sure the bearing is in worse shape than the one in the video was.
Finding this video is going to help me a lot since I’m going to have to get under the car in weather.
I rushed to get as much as I could done before the snow flies, but Oh well…

              thanks again Eric and DaFirnz

snow is over for a while and I’ve got the pulley off. Can see the balls inside the bearing as soon as the clutch came off.
the clip ends were initially too deep inside the groove and had a bear getting the bearing out with a pulley puller.
Oh yeah, if it’s your birthday, Happy Birthday to you!
I’ll try to get at the second clip in the morn or maybe not. I have the newer bearing in and the pulley back on so I may just snap the ring in and the spacer on and call it.
                  what ya think?.
