My 2001 Olds Alero cooling fans turn ON within seconds of starting the car, and never turn OFF.
It’s only 45-50 degrees outside in Columbus, OH in March.
My Haynes manual talks about fans not turning ON, but nothing about not turning OFF.
I pulled the two (2) 30 amp fuses from the fuse-box under the hood, just to keep them off for now.
What’s the most common cause for this condition?
Are the two (2) fan relays bad? (doubtful).
Is it the interior selector knob for heat/defrost mode? or…
Is it a bad A/C button? I know the fans turn ON with Defrost, and also with A/C.
      Is it something else?
      Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
      –Ken, Columbus

Is the ac button on?This will bring on the fans.
Is your coolant full and free of air? this will
cause a false reading. Put the fuses back in.unplug
the coolant temp sensor.see if the fans go off.If they
do then you may have a faulty cts.

Is the defrost for the vehicle on when you start the vehicle?

            What is a “cts”?

Thanks for the info. I will check coolant level, etc.

Sounds like I’m on the right track.

I’m thinking it’s a bad Defrost knob (selector switch) or a bad A/C button (stuck on, even though the light is off).
My wife keeps driving the darn thing, I can’t get my hands on it!!!!
            Thanks,

you might have a stuck closed cooling fan relay.

Do a little homework on how to test relays. Better yet, swap a known good relay, such as your horn relay, with your cooling fan relay and see if ye’ get the results ye’ want.

Do you have any trouble codes? Certain models will turn on the fans when the CEL/SES light is on.

No trouble codes, with my Actron OBD II scan tool.
Checked the A/C button… works fine.. I hear the compressor engage (disengage).
Checked Defrost knob(switch)… works fine too. I hear the compressor engage and disengage.

So I guess that leaves the Relays, or a wiring problem.

I’m getting closer to figuring this out!

                    Thanks for all your help

I replaced 2 relays (from junk yard), and bought a new CTS.
I think I fixed it with the new CTS.
I can put the original relays back in if I want to.
Thanks again for all your help.
Obviously I’m not the only one to have this problem with this car!
