The Honda mechanic has told us both the compressor and condenser are bad in our Odyssey. The repair will run $600-700 at a local mechanic. We were already making plans to sell the car but now I’m worried whether we can even sell it without AC. It will certainly limit the number of potential buyers. Otherwise the car is in very good shape. Listings on Cars.com are in the $1800-2500 range for similar mileage (240k).

Is it worth spending that much on the repair?

Replace the compressor, ‘O’-rings, Accumulator, etc ..

You will need a vacuum pump and gauges.

Recharge to specs, and proper PAG for the oil, and be on your way.

I’m thinking …. $400 to fix your own problem. Maybe less … maybe more.

        Will it last? Don’t know.

Get the factory service manual to know more.

well it would help in the selling of the van I think that I my self would fix the air just because a lot of people would not by it around here in this AL heat. but u always could knock a couple hundred off and let some else fix it. JUST UP TO YOU BUT IN THAT PRICE POINT MAY NOT MATTER MUCH.

disclose that the ac does not work and see if you can
get the 2000-1800 or tell the people you will have the ac
fixed. But the price just went up due to the repair.

600-700 sounds pretty cheap for that repair. it must not be at a shop. Not having AC in a hot climate is definitely a deal killer for a lot of potential buyers. I would look on craigslist to see what similar odysseys are going for, ones without mentioned problems. If they are going for 3000 or more, it might be worth spending 600 bucks. If they are selling for less than 2000, probably not worth it.

ive fixed and sold a ton of cars and work with people that do the same thing. What we have seen that as long as it runs, and its clean, you can almost always get 2000 out of it. Without the AC, you can still put whatever price you want to on it. They will try to talk you down anyway. So put 2500 or 3000 on it and if someone offers you 2000, take it, and good riddance.

That does sound cheap for that repair. Sounds more like $1200-$1400 to me. That said, on a vehicle of that mileage I don’t think it’s worth tin if you’re looking to sell it. It would make it easier to sell, but if you disclose that the AC doesn’t work, you really don’t have to say why and you’d still be OK. If they ask, sure tell them that it needs a compressor, if they don’t, leave it at that. As long as there’s full disclosure I don’t think it will be an issue but you won’t get as much without working AC. Lets be realistic though, it’s an ’01 with almost 250K, sell it as such and I don’t think it will be an issue. Good luck.
