I have an 01 Mustang V6. I know it is a sorry motor. However as with all of my cars I try to put a little extra on them to get more power, and mpg.
Here is my list of Mods, some have nothing to do with Hp.

      Non-hp related mods
      1. JVC 100 WPC CD player, with audio inputs.
      2. 4x Pioneer 5×7 door and rear deck speakers
      3. 1 Audiobahn 10″ sub and enclosure
      4. 400 WPC sub amp (brand name, just don’t remember)
      5. Underdash blue LED strips (I have them in case I drop something in the foot wells)
      6. Cobra Wheels and Rims 275/40/16

      Power related items
      1. SR CAI inner fender mount and seal.
      2. NGK Iridium IX – Spark Plug
      3. MSD performance wires
      4. Ceramic headers long tube
      5. True dual exhaust front to back
      6. Dual flowmaster mufflers
      7. magna flow performance cat x2
      8. Upgraded Focus SVT fuel pump
      9. New fuel filter. (not really a mod)

I went through the entire car cleaning out throttle bodies, intake manifolds, repairing IACV, and all vacuum leaks. Basically did a complete service of the engine. Now I can tell you that I feel an actual difference. I did a lot and I think I gained maybe 20-30 hp or could be more. The car was sluggish, and now it will light up the tires easy and accelerates great. Totally different machine. I did reset the computer.

Now I do not have a tuner for it, but need one. Without a tune what would you guess my Hp would be at the crank? Stock is 193 Hp 225 lb-ft @ 2,800 rpm.
With a tune what could be my potential? I am estimating at this point about 220 hp and 240 tq. Which may be conservative or optimistic. I do not claim to have a clue. Thanks in advance.

I would call the tuner mfg and see if they can give you a link or a website calculator that will give you the number.. sorry I dont know much about racing cars… mostly I work on day to day cars trying to get them to work

There’s a lot of stuff for those 3.8’s. You need to certainly get a tune to take advantage of the mods because a stock ECU will only compensate so much before it stops adding fuel and cutting back. They have parameters that are set from the factory so you will only gain a little.

I drive an 04 V6. Bought a VAP intake spacer. It is NOT a throttle body spacer (paperweight), it goes between the upper and lower intake manifold halves. It lengthens the runners, longer runners are good for low end torque. It’s the reason the Windstar intake setup works so well on our cars. Since our little motors are so handicapped RPM-wise on the top end the slight loss of HP up there can’t be found (at least I’ve never spun it high enough to feel any difference).

My brother drives an 02 V6, got in mine and asked how I got it to feel so much quicker off the line. It was the spacer. It’s said it’s “like a small gear change”. Very noticeable improvement.

It was about 80 bucks with the replacement (longer) bolts needed. Came with two gaskets, ready to install. Took me about two hours but that’s only because I painted my upper intake and had to wait for it to dry. It”s really easy.

I can’t find the website I bought it from now. But if you can, it’s well worth it.

I have been looking for UDP and the VAP sounds good as well. Have any links I sure would appreciate it.

They used to be at vapauto.com. Now that website name is for sale. Appears he gave up the business.

I found one on ebay, but he knows they can’t be found easy now and his asking price shows it.

I found both at http://www.rpmoutlet.com. The UDP is pricey. The intake kit I would have to call them on. Due to limited stock or they do not want to show how cheap or expensive they are selling them for. Who knows?

Trying to make more realistic power out of those V6’s isn’t very easy to be worthwhile. You said you put headers on it, but if you are still pushing through a cat I’m not sure you did anything but move the powerband. I am not condoning removing the cat. Tuning isn’t a bad idea especially for an auto. Underdrive pulleys are a great, cheap mod because your V6 is having to push the same load as a V8. They make a real seat of the pants difference. Also, a steaper rear gear is always a big gainer for a Mustang. These both have drawbacks. Anytime you can get rotational weight down it’s a big plus. For instance with the wheels, for every foot you move the vehicle forward, the mass of the wheel must be moved 3.14 feet. . However the only real way you’re going to be able to make up for the missing cylinders is to force air into the cylinders.

They are hi flo cats that are on it. Long tube headers as well. I edited the post on that account. I am thinking on an underdrive pulley set up. I plan on pulling the rear axle and putting a 8.8 posi lock rear end in there. Just going to buy a used one most likely. Been studying the effect of SC and Turbos, and most likely I will go with a roots SC. Turbos take to long to make hp for me. I want my torque curve to be at lower rpms. I will get a programmer in the future as well.

I have seen dyno results in the 661 Hp 546 tq to the rear wheels on these motors. Might be plenty for me.
