      Hi all,

      Here is a simple ‘how to’ for spark plug replacement on a 01 Chevy Cavalier with a 2.4 DOHC. This ‘how to’ should also work on 96 to 02 DOHC engines also found in other GM products.

      The tools you need are –

      4x AC Delco spark plugs (preferred),
      3/8 Ratchet,
      3/8 extension,
      13mm 3/8 socket,
      Torque Wrench,
      5/8 spark socket (if i remember correctly),
      10mm combination wrench,
      5/16 terminal wrench,
      Dielectric grease,
      (optional Anti seize).

      The first step is to remove the Negative cable from the battery.

      Disconnect the ICM wiring connector by removing the clip that holds the connector in place.

      Next remove the 4 13mm bolts which hold the integrated ignition components in place.

      You may or may not need to remove the 10mm bolt that holds the two A/C lines to its bracket. Removing this bracket will aid on reassemble.
      Then simply pull up.

      Once removed, you should be at this same stage (and yes, the owner knows he needs valve cover gaskets).

      When you remove the cover shown below, the spark plug boots may still be attached to the plugs. Simply remove the spark plug boots and install them on to the integrated ignition setup. I would also add some dielectric grease to the ends of the boots.

      Next take your spark plug socket and extension and remove the 4 spark plugs.

      Then we start to reverse the procedure. Install your 4 new spark plugs and tighten them down to 15ft lbs. You have the option of adding a very small amount of anti seize to the plug threads or a dab of oil.

      Reinstall the integrated ignition components over the to of the plugs. Once in place, press firmly down on the unit so the spark plug boots are fully seated.

      Then reinstall the 4 13mm bolts and the 10mm bolt for the A/C bracket if you removed it.

      You should now be at this stage.

      Attach the ICM connector to the ICM module.

      And finally reinstall the negative battery cable.

      Do one last visual inspection of the area, removing any tools and then start the engine.

      You are now all set!

      I hope this will help someone who has never changed out spark plugs before.

          nice write up! 🙂 i owned a car with the same engine a while back, its a pretty strong engine except the fact that it the water pump problem and also has leaky cam tower gaskets where oil sweats/slow leaks into the valleys where the spark plugs go.

            I have been doing some side work while i recover from back surgery at my home so i thought id document some easy procedures for the DIY’ers to hopefully help them save some money and give them confidence to attempt the job.

              Great write-up dreamer!

              My only suggestion is to maybe circle or otherwise point out the fasteners/connectors in the picture just to make it clearer to the reader what you are referring to in the text. I think you can even do it in MS paint.

                Yes, i was also thinking about that. I’m supposed to be working on a newer Jeep tomorrow so if i make another ‘how thread’ i will use your suggestion!

                  Good write up dreamer. The Ecotec engines are also pretty much the same procedure.
