This seems to be the week for my Accord’s electrical weirdness. Today, my SRS light came on and stayed on. The driver’s side seat belt hasn’t retracted properly for months and I’m wondering if that may have something to do with it. Also, the “side airbag” light has has been intermittent for 12 years and I don’t even have side airbags?! I really don’t want to blindly reset the SRS light in case the airbag is about to erupt in my face w/o warning. And, I’m sure the dealer would want $300 just to “diagnose” the problem. Ideas? TIA

You will need a scan tool to retrieve the SRS codes to help aid in diagnosis.

First off, you probably have the side air bags that are located inside the seats. That vintage Accord can have a side SRS light come on for many reasons such as, leaning on the door, cell phone signals, to the heated seat interfering with the air bag sensor in the seat.

I found out my Accord had a bad seat belt buckle when I noticed the seat belt light did not come on when I unbelted myself. I have seen this in two accords I have owned and Honda was nice enough to replace the seat belt buckle. 🙂

One thing I like about the honda dealer where I live is they didn’t charge a diagnostic fee. Well, maybe I just got lucky that day, who knows. A scan tool will help you read the codes for your srs and airbag lights. I would call the dealer and ask how much they would charge you to look at the problem. At least you’ll know what your getting into.

Side airbags didn’t show up till about 05 and those were in the A pillar.

You need to pull the codes and find out why the light is on, you really can’t go blind into this. Unfortunately you may need to goto the Honda dealer for this because many scanners will not read SRS codes. That said if it IS a seat belt BUCKLE then it’s covered under Honda’s lifetime seat belt warranty. As for the retractor it’s a VERY common problem. Try cleaning the anchor on the B pillar. You’ll often see a gunk buildup there that inhibits seat belt operation. Even after that it’s probably not going to be that great because Honda seat belt retractors suck.

I am referring the the little air bags inside the seats. I know they have been available since MY 2000. I’ve heard many stores about them on early models setting off the Side SRS light

Perhaps I’m wrong about that but I don’t remember seeing airbags in the seats till later. I could be wrong though.

Aside from that I still recommend having the codes pulled as the poster might be able to get the problem repaired for free if it’s a seat belt issue.
