The title pretty much says it all: 2000 Ford Mustang, V6 – just blew the upper radiator hose on Sunday. Did some internet searching – I found some oil on the radiator cap. I’m going to do a compression test (again) and see what the results are this time. (First time was months ago, and everything was fine across the board.)
The car has 235K miles on it – is a head gasket worth the trouble? Or should I swap the entire motor? Or just sell it as is with full disclosure, of course. I have no problems admitting the head gasket issue.
How would you weight your options?
I “like” the car – don’t LOVE it. There’s a lot of aftermarket parts to have fun with, I really like the body style.

It’s a close call. If there is oil in coolant there is probably coolant in oil and there’s where just replacing valve cover gasket is not enough. With 235,000 miles you might see what a mustang fan would pay to buy it above salvage value. I love mustangs but in this case I’d have a mechanic friend look at it and see if he thinks there is coolant in oil and if so break open the engine and just give me opinion if he suspects more damage. If he thinks very small leak and no other damage I’d have him complete the repair. If news is not good, I’d have him close it up and I’d sell it to someone looking for a real project car (maybe they already know they want to put new engine in whatever they buy) or I’d sell it to salvage yard.
