I have a 2000 ford windstar I have recently fixed a misfire and a battery drain but now I have a issue that has been bugging me now ever since I bought the van. The van has the codes p0171 system too lean bank 1 and p0174 system to lean bank 2 and I cant seem to figure it out. I have changed all the fuel injectors and the intake manifold gaskets and checked for vacuum leaks like in the video eric showed and cant find nothing. Its been like this for about 5 years I heard this is a common problem with the 99-00 ford windstars.

try cleaning the maf sensor.Have you checked fuel pressure?
can you read fuel trim?December 15, 2012 at 5:37 am #484697Do you have the 3.0 or 3.8L motor? There’s a TSB for the 3.8. The links to the 5 pages of the TSB are at the bottom of this link. http://leckemby.net/windstar/windstar01.html
December 16, 2012 at 5:39 am #484975I have the 3.8L and I did that tsb already and I have cleaned the mass air flow sensor already but I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and q tips and I also replaced the fuel filter. I have not checked fuel pressure but I can plug in my code reader and get the freeze frame data if that could help.

Anything but electrical contact cleaner or specific MAF cleaner will likely leave residue, or do outright damage. It’s a thin filament detecting the drop across it, rubbing alcohol, store bought, is usually at best 85% alcohol, and will inhibit it’s ability at the very least in the long-term, if not short. In addition, you likely had at least a few strands of the qtip cotton left on the filament, which are now likely burned onto it. FORD as far as I know uses hot wire MAF sensors fairly exclusively.
December 16, 2012 at 10:04 pm #485062The only reason why I used rubbing alcohol is because I saw a video by briansmobile1 on youtube and he said that it would work. So most likely I need a new mass air flow sensor.
December 16, 2012 at 10:42 pm #485064before condemning the maf sensor.Have you changed the
fuel filter? when you can check fuel pressure and the
FPR.also check the vacuum line to the FPR for looseness.I’m bad you did do the fuel filter. 😳
December 17, 2012 at 2:34 am #485117I’d probably swap it out, re-furbs are cheap enough (and returnable) just to see. I’ve actually watched a few of his, good guy, great mechanic, but I strongly urge not to do that.
Since you’ve done the fuel filter already, not much left to check other than pressure, and going over each connection/hose again. A short vid of the fuel trims with pressure if you’ve got a scan tool with live data capability might give at least a further hint with some revving should a replacement MAF sensor not solve it.
December 17, 2012 at 3:56 am #485122I have changed the fuel filter and I changed the FPR vacuum line when I did the tsb on my van. Unfortunately I dont have a fuel pressure tester and a scanner that has live data capability but I do have one that has freeze frame data if that could help. I will try and get a fuel pressure tester this week.
December 17, 2012 at 4:46 am #485139when you did the intake gaskets.did you replace the intake
isolator bolts. If not spray around those for a vacuum
leak when the engine is cold and first started.December 17, 2012 at 4:46 am #485140when you did the intake gaskets.did you replace the intake

use a spray bottle with water.December 17, 2012 at 8:30 am #485184i wish my women ran lean..

Can’t hurt…
December 27, 2012 at 12:31 am #486924Don’t rule out exhaust leaks. If you have an exhaust leak before or near the O2 sensor in question it can also set that code.
January 2, 2013 at 6:39 pm #488114Sorry for taking so long to reply was on vacation. I am still not able to test fuel pressure because I don`t have a fuel pressure tester. I will check for exhaust leaks next and I was told it could be a o2 sensor is there a way to test them with a multimeter.
January 2, 2013 at 6:46 pm #488116Forgot to add I did change the isolator bolts and checked for vacuum leaks and there were none but I have notice that the idle is a bit off it does not shut off but it feels like the idle is too low and on some times when you start the van with a cold engine is feels like its about to shut off but when you give it a little gas it acts normal and every thing is fine.
