When I was taking brakes class I stumble upon a problem with my car. I found out that I had a missing tone ring in the right rear wheel. I replaced it. now I am getting a code that says speed sensor malfunction. I checked the connection of the abs sensor and it can be easily pulled out. I think that is my problem. but I am wondering if you guys had any problems with the focus tone ring or anything related to it.

Also when you do wheel bearings on the focus. do not throw out the magnet on the back of the drum assembly. that is your tone ring. also do not scratch it with any metal. it will throw the magnetic sensor off. Honda’s I think have the same setup.

Wait, did you have a code when the tone ring was missing? And what code was set?

Keep in mind you also need to have the correct clearance at the sensor and the tone ring cannot be damaged in any way, if it is it can give a false reading. The best way to check a sensor is with a lab scope perhaps you can get your hands on one in school and observe the pattern as you spin the wheel.

Also here is a video ScannerDanner made on ABS wheel testing.

When I recieved the part my teacher took a cover of a cd case and metal shavings. then he put it on the sensor to see if there was any distortion pattern on the ring. It was a new part and it was okay. when you do this, you could see the patterns on the tone ring.

              I dont remember the code.

I… What? This post is a bit confusing. To me at least. Can you explain a bit?

Yea I’m a little lost on this post too. Could you provide a bit of clarification and do you still have the issue even after verifying that you have a good signal from the sensor?
