Hello everyone
I have a 00 dodge neon 2.0 liter engine, automatic w/220000 miles on it
Everything was working great with this car till 2weeks ago
Is been burning oil and shaking a little when is on idle only and I did a compression test on the engine since the injectors are working good and I have a good spark on each cilynder there are not vacuum leaks around it(I spray water and double check with brake cleaner) I also unpluged the spark plugs and I noticed that I have a missfire on cylinder #1 because is not working
So I decided to do a compression test (dry and wet) and this is what I got…#1. #2. #3. #4
D. 115. 175. 180. 185W. 150. 195. 205. 210
So the specs for this car according to the manual are
Standar………170 to 225 psi
Minimum…….25 percentI took the head off
There are no cracks on the head or on the block it seems that it was passing oil to the #1 cyl. Trhu the head gasket everything else is ok just normal wering there are not scraches on the cylinder walls
So since I can’t afford the machine shop.
My question is can I replace the piston rings with standar ones?
Since they are worn out, By just cleaning the cylinder walls a little bit with a cylinder hone

sounds like all you need is a head gasket.If your not
going to do a complete rebuild.Then just leave it.Either
get another motor or a crate motor.I am not really one for mechanic in a can,but I have used engine restorer (silver can)for blow by and low compression,if you dont want to spend a bunch on the motor give it a new head gasket and some restorer.

I have the same problem, with the #4 in my 1996 Neon DOHC mtx with 290,000 miles on it. Gives a CEL for misfire all the time. keeps turning the CEL on for a while then resets itself for a while over and over. Just use it for short trips around town now. Used to be a 150 mile DD for my wife. Now she’s got a 1998 with 138,000 miles that has now become the wife’s Daily Driver
I only did the compression test
Cuz as far as I know. The dry test is for the heads and the wet test is for the piston rings
So I end up taking everything apart and tomorrow I’m goona finish the hole thing….just a quick posting about my dodge neon
I did the piston rings and a new head gasket set
and now its running great it feels smoother than before
im thinking maybe cuz the pistons rings are holding better pressure than before…
life its great !!!
