About ETCG1

ETCG1 checker Logo Broken small 2018 copyI started the ETCG1 channel about a year or so after starting the EricTheCarGuy channel.  I did this for a couple of reasons.  The first is that I needed a place where I could post 'non-repair' videos that related to EricTheCarGuy, it became apparent early on that my audience on EricTheCarGuy were interested in repair videos only so to accommodate them and fill the need for video topics outside of repair ETCG1 was born.  The second reason is that it became apparent that many viewers had questions about becoming professional technicians and they wanted to learn what it was like to work in the field, they also seemed interested in my opinions and experiences that developed while working as a technician.  ETCG1 has become something of a 'soapbox' for me to share these thoughts and ideas and it gives me the opportunity to respond to some of the questions I get about the auto repair industry.  ETCG1 is also a place where you can learn a little more about what it is to be and work as EricTheCarGuy, best job in the world if you asked me.  Why not watch a few videos and let me know what YOU think?

There have been some questions about why I've chosen this beat up old Acura Vigor as a project car. It's obviously in rough shape, at least on the outside.

The idea for You Tend To Specialize came to me while cleaning up the shop. I noticed that I tend to own and work on vehicles that I'm familiar with, Honda's mostly. I don't think I'm alone in this. I think a lot of technicians tend to specialize when it comes to repair work.

The genesis of this video came about when my late friend Ryan Coffey's 2002 GMC Sonoma came in for some brake service. Before I called for parts, it got all 4 wheels up off the ground and inspected all the brakes. I also took the rear drums off to inspect the rear shoes and wheel cylinders.

When Tools Go Bad is a video about my recent experiences with an AC manifold gauge set. I had been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why I was not able to charge a system on a particular vehicle and come to find out, my manifold set was bad.

The idea for Pattern Repairs came to me as I was working at the shop one day. In my career I've found that many times you get a 'run' on certain repairs. Granted, some of these repairs are due to changes in the weather, but others don't seem to be related to that. Sometimes you seem to see a lot of the same break downs in a short period of time. I call these, "Pattern Repairs".
