Crank/No Start
This is where it gets fun. To restate what a crank/no start is, it’s when you turn the key and you can hear the engine moving but it’s just not catching and running. You can first eliminate all the above causes in this article because you have confirmed that your starter, cables, and battery connections are likely good. If they weren’t, you wouldn’t hear the engine turning over when you turn the key.

There are several causes of this type of no-start, but I’ll cover the basics here. An engine needs three things to run:
- A fuel supply; without fuel, the engine won’t run.
- A spark (for gasoline-powered engines). The spark is delivered to the combustion chamber via the ignition system. If you have a fault here, the engine won’t start.
- Mechanical integrity.
There are actually quite a few mechanical issues that can cause a no-start condition with an engine. This video covers the basics of dealing with a crank/no start condition to get you started.

Hi,
Can someone help. I have a weird issue going on with my 2009 Honda Accord, and no one is able to diagnose this issue.
It has happed 2 times, after driving about 30-40 miles, I parked my car for few minutes. Come back try to start the car, it will not start. Then pressed the brake pedal and turn the key and car starts.
First time it happened, got battery checked, it’s in good condition. There is no error code. After about 2 weeks today it happened again. Tried to start, all lights are coming up as normal, but will not start. Pressed the brake pedal, released it and car will start. Not sure what’s going on, do not want to replace a car. Please help.

I just worked on a friend’s Honda Odyssey f22b. It came in with a misfire caused by broken exhaust valve on cylinder#3. I replaced the valves, reinstalled everything but now my crank sounds like I’m lacking compression. I am confused how the vehicle was drove into my area and now has a compression issue. Any help would be much appreciated..

Hello, I follow all of your videos and they are very helpful. I have a 2004 acura tl. I just replaced the spark plugs, water pump, timing belt and tensioners, oil pump and thermostat. I was driving it for a few days and ran great. I noticed I had a headlight out and went to fix that and as i had everything up it was getting dark outside so i went to pull the car up the driveway and the car cranked like crazy but would not start. I am not sure on what to check. I would assume its not the timing due to the fact i just replaced it and it ran great before hand. Please let me know what i need to check and what electrical issues/relays/or fuses i may check. I went to plug in my scan tool and my obd will not register. Thanks for the help. very frustrating!

Hi Hope you can help me. I went to jump start my 2004 CRV (Running Jeep Liberty to CRV) the problem was I got the Positive & negative wrong on the CRV & I tried to start it several times before I realized my mistake. I bought a new battery & installed now the CRV cranks but won’t start. I pulled every fuse under dash & under the hood not a single one was blown. Not even the 100 amp battery fuse. What should I check next? Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Thank you.

no crank no start on the 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 s overheated my engine due to a head gasket and water got in the oil I drain the oil low drain the coolant I remove the head put a new gasket head on new oil new coolant new oil filter but it’s still coolant in the oil
Sometimes it runs sometimes it doesn’t and when it starts up when it’s for a long period of time it starts shaking and it’s not drivable it just starts up if I try to reverse it’ll shut offas of lately it’s not starting but it’ll turn over any suggestions or advice I bought the car for $3,000 so far only put in $700 worth of work not trying to go that much if it’s not worth it

Hey Eric, I have a 2003 Honda Civic LX that shut off going down the road the other day. We towed it to a friends house and my dad replaced the timing belt which had broken. The timing belt is brand new and all set properly to the right marks. The engine still sounds the same when we try starting it; cranks and spins but won’t start. We even tried hooking up the battery to make sure it hadn’t run low while repairs were being done. My dads not sure what’s wrong still for it not to work. He’s going to do some research tonight but I was hoping you might have some advice, I’ve used several of your videos for other repairs. The wngine light is on and throws a few codes for the O2 sensor but nothing else. My spark plugs are worn but still spark and the coil packs he says are good. How would I go about diagnosing whether it’s the crankshaft or something in the ignition system? It just got cut off unexpectedly with no warning, I never had any issues with anything like this. If there’s any more info I can provide I’m happy to, I’m not sure what is useful or not as this is my first car.

I have a 2007 Volkswagen Passat crank , no start. I replaced parts and eliminated the error codes, I replace the fuel pump, high pressure fuel pump, spark plugs, starter, alternator, mass flow sensor, and engine control module and still no start. Call reads immobilized error. What else can I do to start it. SOS!!!

Hi Eric, I have a 2000 Acura TL with over 290,000 miles on it. Its used to start okay then after some time, it has problems. I changed the fuel pump, replaced the starter, replaced the fuel pump relay, i even cleaned the throttle body. Now a day ago i tried to start it, it started normally then i realized a D5 light flashing then i turned off the egine. then started it again and it was cranking but not starting.i will check the sparks. Now i am trying to look for the distributer cap but i cannot locate it maybe you can do a video of how to diagonise a 2000 acura tl with starting problems

I had a crank no start condition that left me stranded. I thought of everything and the two things that it could have been was a bad fuel pump which I had just changed earlier this year. Didn’t make sense as I had just drove it and there were no issues. I needed to go to the post office and when I came out the truck would turn over but not start. Sprayed starting fluid in and it would run as long as the spray can was held down. There were no codes. Still the fuel pump would be letting me know something as it had before, running badly but that wasn’t the case. I also had done a tune-up and knew that what could go wrong had been replaced. Now for the second idea. My sister-in-law was having her car worked on so she needed another ride so I gave her my spare key. She got in and cranked the engine and it cranked over but wouldn’t start. That happened almost 2 months ago. When I hopped inside I tried my key and it fired up. HUH that key needs to be reflashed again I thought. Now it happened to me with my key. Both of these keys are aftermarket with batteries in them. I found the original key to this truck and tried that today. It fired up and ran like nothing was wrong. OK bad battery on my aftermarket key as well. Open up the key and got another one from the store. There is a difference between the 1632 battery and the 1620 battery the store sells. They look identical but this 1632 battery is thicker. I was stranded over a battery no bigger than the end of my finger.

2007 Honda Civic . I turn the key to start the car, everything turns on but once I let go of key it turns off/dies. I’ve watched a few videos and read stuff but I’m still wanting to see if I can figure it out before taking her to a shop :/ Also when I turn the key and give gas and keep rpm at 2000 or whatever it eventually stays on and runs fine. Please help 😭
