I’m sure we’ve all run into these people before. How do you handle it?

No bad apples out there. Not for me. Just left a job where the boss/supervisor
made the shop a black whole. Sucking the life out of me. Got to the point I did
not want to get up in the morning let alone drive there. Got out of there 3 months
ago. Better but not great. The search does continue. One day when ETCG grows beyond
belief. corporate here I come. 🙂 My dream job.

The same thing happened to me, College Man.

I work in a MoM & PoP shop now. I haven’t been this happy in years. I hope to finish up my career there.

Our bad apple at our shop left a while ago and life has been so much better for everyone at the shop, The boss seems more understanding of the rest of us. I guess of the guys left I might be the worst apple now 😆 but I am usually the only one in the shop the other two guys are service truck drivers.

At the root of the problem is a lack of actual manager training for the shop manager. I spent 15 years in management, and now 2 years as a maintenance technician for hvac, electrical, plumbing. I can speak on both sides of the issue. As a manager one has to certainly respond quickly to the bad apple. Fact is, a good manager really ought to act before other employees bring the subject up. One has to be in touch enough to sense ‘disturbances in the force’

As a technician I get the displeasure to follow behind a ‘channel locker’ You know…. its the only tool in his bag because thats all he ever uses… The trick is Never never go on his ‘call back’ or repeat call if at all possible. Just slide the paper back to him and say… Looks like ya didnt get it all figured out last week….

Yes, I agree, one bad apple does spoil the bunch – plus it gives the people with bad tendencies an excuse to join in and it makes their lives much, much worse (like many other things in human behavior)…not good! I think it is everybody’s own personal responsibility to know and regulate their own behaviors/reactions and management’s job to help get them there or, in the end, show them the door. After all, they would probably be happier somewhere else (with their own kind…like at a collection agency or government service center) or simply working in their own…..someplace else.

That being said, Eric, I have a question: A green screen, in your shop, to film a video that onto which you put a background of your shop? That seems like some kind of crazy, circular, tautological, existential kind of thingy there. Be careful, I think that’s how black holes are formed….ha!

Great video and keep the quality coming!

The last place i worked there was kind of a bad apple. He wasn’t a bad mechanic, he just was negative. It was hard to be happy around him. He did his job very well but it was hard to be near him because he would just rant about work, life and everything. Was rare to hear something positive from him.
He ended up quitting after things got slow. Was kinda quiet around the shop after he left.
